Growing Roses: The Top 5 Mistakes Most People Make

August 30, 2008

Growing roses is both an art and a science: as my gardening aunt used to say, “…it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other!”

As a rose grower myself and author of a gardening website, I get many questions about why a certain rose bush has failed or what a person might be doing wrong. Over time, these many mistakes people make, began to fall into five major categories.

The five major rose growing mistakes that most people could avoid!

1. Planting in the wrong location:

Before you actually dig the hole for your new rose bush, consider the location. It will need six hours of good light including some time in the sun. It will need healthy soil where water drains well and other plants and trees haven’t taken over with their own roots. Not in the shade of a large tree, or over a concrete pipe or in a pot small enough for a geranium! Take time to choose the right location.

2. Choosing the wrong bush in the first place:

My rose bush, Savoy Hotel, grew so large I had to move the neighbors fence! The estimated size was actually on the label when I purchased it, so check how big it will get and plan the space accordingly. Rose bushes are programed to grow to a certain size, not necessarily the height you want, so check the labeling carefully.

While doing this check, look up the hardiness of the particular rose. Not all roses grow at minus 20 degrees centigrade in Calgary! Some are very susceptible to certain diseases such as blackspot, and guess what, some rose bushes only bloom once a year!

Check these things out BEFORE you purchase.

Type of rose, color, scent, size at full growth, hardiness and blooming time: make your choices before you plant, not after.

3. Pruning at the wrong time of year:

I have an acquaintance who continues to question why her roses don’t bloom: even though, every year she cuts out all the new growth as it tries to bud, because this new growth blocks her view out of her living-room window. Pruning at the correct time will promote growth and increase blossom production.

Climbers should be pruned in the fall and trained to travel where you want them to travel. Fall is the time to train your climbers, not the spring, because all you would be doing is removing the new shoots that produce the new stems and the new blossoms.

Hybrid Teas and minis that have a repeat blooming, get cut back in early spring and just given a short haircut in the fall to prevent wind damage during the winter. This cut back in spring promotes new growth and helps you to re-shape the bush.

Bushes that don’t re-bloom such as most Old Growth Roses, get pruned right after the blossoms fade, sometimes after the hips have formed if you like to encourage the hips to grow: perhaps as late as the fall. Pruning at the correct time will produce a healthier bush and a lot more roses!

4. Not knowing exactly what you planted:

You will not have much success with one, two or three above if you haven’t dealt with this one, and you would be surprised how many people tell me ”…I don’t remember the name….and I can’t for the life of me find the metal tag….are you sure there was one?”

All roses come with a metal name tag and if they don’t, go buy them somewhere that does!

Keep the tag on the bush and make a note of what it says, then in a year or two when you need an answer to a question about something that has gone wrong you can look it up and people like myself can help you.

Not knowing if the bush is a climber or a Polyantha, Rosa Mundi or Queen Elizabeth, makes a lot of difference. Knowing the name means you can check with your National or local society about the likely growing characteristics of your plant: knowing what it should be doing goes a long way to solving most problems.

5. Not tending to the W.F.D:

Of course, I know of several beautiful roses that have spread themselves along twenty feet or more of stone wall, and produced arm-loads of fabulous roses every year while getting no attention whatsoever: even abuse from passing car exhausts. But if you are going to be successful, don’t fall into the trap of ignoring the W. F and D!

Water, Food and Dead-heading, all play their part in rose growing 101 and you ignore them at your peril. Mistake number five, ignoring the W. F and D chores.

Water deeply at least twice a week. Put down organic rose fertilizer in early spring and early summer. Liquid fertilize every week or two and keep the rose clean of dead blooms otherwise the bush thinks it’s finished for the season and go dormant, produce hips, and get completely confused. Keep the roses coming by removing the old faded ones. Your rose bush wants to make more babies….encourage it to do so!

If you tend to your rose garden and avoid these five major mistakes, the chances are high that your bushes will flourish and your roses will be the envy of your family and friends. Growing roses will have it’s reward if you take notice of the five mistakes.

Growing roses just got easier.

Should You be Loyal to Your Local Garden Supply Center

August 30, 2008

If you are serious about your beloved garden then you will be serious about your local garden supply center. You want to be sure that your garden center supplies quality plants and garden tools. You get to know after time what they stock and when the seasonal items will be coming in. Some very customer focused garden centres will even survey customers to find out what varieties of plants they want.

Another area of marketing is the loyalty card schemes and related gardening clubs. These are the sort of methods that are not offered by the larger chains of garden supply centers. (With the exception of loyalty cards perhaps)

One of the advantages enjoyed by the large garden supply center companies is the pricing they can offer their customers. Due to the large quantities they purchase for resell they can usually get a better deal than the smaller independent operators. However, the one thing that many smaller garden supply centers have that many of the big chains lack is service and knowledge of the products they sell. Of course the economies of scale are also a disadvantage because you will have the same plants as everyone else. If you like growing a more eclectic range of flowers and vegetables you will only get these from the smaller garden suppliers.

For the home gardener who knows exactly what they want and how to use it, the larger corporate garden supply center is going to have a larger selection from which to choose while saving a little but of money. However, seeking advice from the same chain’s employees can be hit or miss as to whether they understand home gardening or just there for a summer job.

Local Garden Centers Have the Advantage

While there are pros and cons to both the small independent garden supply center and the large chain-owned outlets the needs and preference of the customer are often different, resulting in some customers sharing their business between the two. There is also a perception that the independent garden supply center must be priced higher than their corporate competition and in some cases that may be true, but customers are often surprised by the savings they can find at the small outlets.

Where the independent local garden supply center will score is in the choice of plants. They will be localized to your area and will grow well for you. The large chains will have the same inventory for a wide geographical area. But not all the plants that grow in the south of the country will work in the north because of different daylight sun hours and rainfall. The other reason why the plants will be more suitable for you is that they will work in your soil.

The expertise of the garden centre staff will know the general conditions of the soils in your area and they will make sure they sell what grows best for you.

So while the large multiple garden centers do have a place for the serious gardener you need to lose your local garden supply center.

Finding the Right Topsoil Screen for the Job

August 30, 2008

Whether you’re one person with a little garden or a large landscape company, a topsoil screen can make you more efficient. Topsoil screens come in a variety of configurations, from small, individual screens to huge motorized pieces of equipment. Some of the most common uses are the removal of rocks, sticks, and sod to leave usable soil behind. The usefulness of each topsoil screen is dependent on your goals.

A Topsoil Screen for the Home Gardener

If you are simply interested in using a topsoil screen to filter out the sticks, stones, and other junk in your yard dirt, then a small one is probably perfectly adequate for your needs. This type of device usually includes a single screen, and it may fit over a box or even your wheelbarrow. There are even some that have been designed to fit perfectly over any five gallon bucket. You simply shovel the dirt onto the screen and then either tamp it down or shake the screen. The small particles filter through the screen, while the larger debris remains on top so that you can remove it. A series of ever-finer screens can be used if you wish to separate your yard dirt into different categories.

Equipment for Businesses

valuable tool in a variety of businesses. For the professional landscaper, it can save money; as there is less need to truck in topsoil from outside sources. Nurseries and even golf courses have found that use of a topsoil screen also translates into less environmental impact due to the on-site capabilities of the machines.

A commercial-grade topsoil screen is going to be mechanized and will utilize some sort of motor to create the vibrations necessary to send dirt and other organic materials through the filter. In many cases, an operator will have the job of loading dirt onto the machine as well as removing the larger debris that has been filtered out. Some machines, however, have an integrated conveyor that carries the debris away.

Because so much more is expected of a commercial-grade topsoil screen, they are much larger and sturdier than the ones that would be used by the home gardener. Some actually utilize other large equipment to load the dirt and are therefore able to sift several hundred cubic yards in a day. This might include the ability to use a Bobcat or a backhoe. These commercial-grade machines might also come with a towing hitch in order to more easily take the machine from site to site.

More about Topsoil Screens

While it’s common to think about using woven wire for a topsoil screen, there are several other options available. One topsoil screen may utilize piano wire while another uses a punched plate, for example. The material used to build the screen will help determine how fine of a mesh is created. The size of the openings allows for a variety of uses.

Although we’ve only looked at how to use a screen in order to make good topsoil, there are other uses for this type of product. Simple changes to the design mean that you can use a similar device to separate various sized rocks and gravel, to sift compost, and much more. They are even used regularly in the recycling industry. A qualified dealer can help you determine what type of topsoil screen is going to be the best for your needs.

Andy West is a writer for EZ-Screen, which offers many varieties of vibrating screens and topsoil screen equipment.

Excuses For When Your Business Card Holder Turns Up in the Most Unlikely Places

August 30, 2008

This society’s penchant for personal branding and individuality has lead to complications. When you do not want to be identified, you will be and when you desire anonymity, you will gain notoriety.

Unlike clothes, you cannot disown a personalized business card holder with business cards in it! So what happens when your business card holder is found in these places and everybody you know teases and confronts you about it?

Sleazy Motels

Sometimes, but hopefully not often, you will stay in a roadside motel with a reputation for being a lovers’ nest, a prostitutes’ haven, and a brothel front. This is not to say that you frequent these motels but road mishaps do happen especially when you are on a hanky-panky business with your paramour! (Such an old-fashioned yet appropriate word, don’t you think?)

What do you tell your wife when the desk clerk calls to return your leather wallet with your initialed business card holder to boot?

* Your car was in an accident and the motel was the nearest accommodation available. Well, it is the truth so you get to tell just half a lie. It is good for your conscience, don’t you think?

* Your buddies surreptitiously got your wallet with the business card holder tucked inside and played a prank on you. This is a good one when your buddies will cover your ass anytime of day, no questions asked, and the desk clerk is incapable of speech and thought. Good luck on the second one.

Strip Clubs/Brothels

Uh-oh. You are in trouble. But have no fear; you can always lay the blame on others, on alcohol, on fate, on the weather and on your wife herself. Here is how:

* You can tell your wife that your buddies dragged you into the club but you just watched the show. Cross your heart and hope to die. (Well, actually you crossed your fingers those girls will take it all off.) At the same time, your buddies are also laying the blame on you so that makes all of you even Steven.

* You got so drunk you were barely aware of where you were, which explains the wayward wallet with the business card holder. You slept through the whole show and your buddies helped you get home, Again, better pray to the gods of men that your buddies will cover up for you anytime, big time!

* You were fated to be there that night. If your wife is a big believer in destiny, then maybe it is your destiny to fool her, too. Maybe.

* You just found cover from a brewing storm inside the club. Is there something wrong in keeping your head safe from lightings? Certainly not!

* This is the ultimate. You can tell your wife it is her fault because either she does not cater to your needs anymore or she is not desirable anymore or that she constantly fights with you and you needed to get off steam. You can always pick a fight and divert the issue, right?

However, something bad can be said about leaving something as identifiable as your business card holder in these places. What on God’s earth were you thinking when you brought your business accessories to these places anyway?

You will not be in trouble now and reading this if you divested yourself of business articles before going on monkey business, will you?

You will not be ashamed to carry around high-quality engraved Zippos and a genuine leather money clip from ExecutiveGiftShoppe.com, even when your business card holder gets lost in the most unlikely of places. Find all these and more at ExecutiveGiftShoppe.com today!

Of Leather Briefcases, Accountants and Assassins

August 30, 2008

Disclaimer: This article in no way seeks to diminish the profession of accountants and to elevate the profession of assassins. This is simply a tongue in cheek analysis of leather briefcases as used by accountants and assassins alike. (Remember, you must love your accountant lest you find yourself in trouble with the Internal Revenue Service and you need to love assassins lest you find yourself in trouble with the Bible’s commandment about loving your enemy. Sad but true)

Professional Disparateness

Though you might think that assassins and accountants do the same thing - they can kill you, only in different means and methods - they are very distinct professions with equally distinct characteristics. Here are just two of them:

* Accountants deal with the paperwork and numbers. They lug around voluminous papers that threaten to drown anybody who dares decipher the codes embedded therein and they eat numbers for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And these same papers are miraculously stuffed into the slimmest of leather briefcases!

Assassins deal with the dirty work and revolvers. They lug around killing tools that can be hidden most conveniently inside their coats or the most elegant leather briefcases and they eat souls like the Devil incarnate. Or at least, that is what Hollywood wants us to believe; God forbid you ever cross path with an assassin out to terminate your existence.

* Accountants use the power of the pen and calculator to kill (okay, make that crunch) numbers. And lest you even dare think that you can actually make sense of financial statements without burning the midnight oil (and a few of your functioning brain cells while you are at it), think again. Accountants use them to confuse both you and the Internal Revenue Service. And these financial statements change as fast as you can count your fingers! Drat, there goes your profit reduced by depreciation yet again.

Assassins use the brute power of car bombs, sniper rifles, blades and other weapons

of destruction, plus a timer here and there, to kill numbers. If you cannot make sense of financial statements, you cannot make sense of the killings either.

Professional Similarities

Now, this is the more interesting part. How can two professions - one killing inanimate numbers, the other killing animate numbers - have similarities? If you think hard enough, you will get these:

* Both accountants and assassins have uncommon affinity for leather briefcases. It seems that leather briefcases serve the purpose of organizing files and ammunitions at the same time! Remember the movie “Wanted”?

* Both accountants and assassins must be licensed. The former by appropriate government agencies before they can practice their profession. On the other hand, assassins must be licensed to kill by anybody they like whether borne of their own demented minds, fanatical beliefs and monetary greed.

* And oh yes, both accountants and assassins can kill you. Accountants kill you by spiriting away your money to bogus corporations while assassins kill you by spiriting your soul, or whatever it is that makes us human.

In conclusion, if you suspect your accountant to be an assassin in disguise ready to make an ass out of you, then leather briefcases full of your financial documents could be on your next target, er, agenda.

The Proper Way to Set Up Your Bedroom

August 30, 2008

You spend more time in your bedroom than anywhere else, so it’s important to keep this space free of clutter and as well designed as possible. Depending on what you use your bedroom for, you’ll need to plan accordingly. Here are some helpful tips on deciding what bedroom furniture will best suit your living area.

First, decide what’s most important to you in this space. Will it primarily be designated for sleeping? If this is the case, you may want to consider a setup that works off of that simplicity. Many people find that keeping the bedroom devoted entirely to a good night’s rest results in increased quality of sleep. Recent research has shown that doing work in bed has a negative effect on the sleep cycle, because the stress from all of that information invades the brain even after the work is put away. Likewise, do you want the drone of a TV constantly in the background? You may prefer to leave the television in the living room, and limit the bedroom to more intellectual pursuits such as reading.

Perhaps you live in a small apartment, however, with limited space in the areas outside of the bedroom. In this case, the best move from a design standpoint may be to include a desk inside of the bedroom. Remember, though: with this added desk you’ll also need to keep a chair handy, and this will take even more space. You could always save some room with a fold up chair, but if you’re going to do a lot of work, this probably isn’t feasible. After all, they aren’t the most comfortable.

What about all of your clothing? If there’s a ton of closet space, your needs will probably be satisfied by only one small dresser. If, on the other hand, you’re living in a room without closets, you’ll need to purchase furniture to handle your clothing. Depending on how much you have, this can range from a minimum of furnishings to an entire storage system, with armoires and full size dressers.

Once you’ve decided on what furniture you’ll be putting in your bedroom, it’s time to think about the layout. Look where the windows are in the room. You’ll want to maximize the available sunlight, so avoid putting furniture in front of the glass. There is a certain design aesthetic that differs with each person, so take the time to explore the different options. Shift the bed to the other side of the room, and lay down for a moment to see whether it feels like it’s in the right position.

The way you design your bedroom is a reflection on yourself. Considering that some of the most intimate moments in our lives take place in this space, you should spend a correspondingly appropriate amount of time taking the necessary steps to ensure that your space says the right thing about you. You may spend a little extra money and time in the process, but considering that you spend hours upon hours in this room, isn’t it worth it?

Canister Vacuums – Not Your Mom’s Cleaning Machines

August 30, 2008

A lot of people still stereotype the canister vacuum. They see it as something that was used by women in the fifties and sixties to clean their carpets and drapes and upholstery. While canister vacuums were used then, there is a lot more to them than that. These kinds of vacuums were replaced in the eyes of many people with the upright vacuum cleaners of today, and they are about all people think of when someone says the words ‘vacuum cleaner’ to them. For wall to wall carpet, these are definitely the right cleaning machines to use. When people have hardwood floors and tile, however, they still want to use canister vacuums. These machines have come a long way from the original models that were so popular years ago and they can do a lot more than they used to be able to do. People who own them know this, but people who just move into a home with hard floors or someone who has hardwood and tile put into their home might not be aware of it.

While not designed to work well on wall to wall carpet, canister vacuums have their place in the world. They work best on hardwood floors and tile, but there are other advantages to having one around. These include cleaning draperies, upholstery, and area rugs. The upright vacuums can’t be used on these more delicate fabrics. The suction is too strong and because of that items can become damaged if vacuuming is too rigorous or too often. Some more delicate items can actually become damaged the first time because they get sucked into the machine or the vacuum stretches their threads, ruining the fabric. For these people, canister machines are the only ones that work properly and keep their delicate items from being destroyed. When people clean their homes they want to make things look better, not worse, and the wrong kind of cleaning machine can be a serious problem for them.

It is easy to damage a lot of things in a person’s home and people often don’t realize how quickly this can happen. It can be especially problematic for people who just got something new – or inherited something old – and aren’t really that sure how to take care of it. For them, cleaning may be difficult. It can also be costly if they don’t take the time to learn how to clean something properly before they start trying to take care of it. The unfortunate thing with these issues is that they can take place before you realize it and they can be irreparable. For someone who is interested in getting the right kind of canister vacuum, the suction power should be looked at. Other important issues include how wide of a cleaning path the machine has, what kinds of attachments are available for the machine, and the warranty that it has on it. Paying attention to those things and doing your research first can help ensure that you have everything you need and can properly take care of everything in your home.

Home Improvements With Samsung BD-P1000 & Panasonic DMP-BD10 Reviews

August 30, 2008

A heads up here with some technical notes, before launching into the product reviews. Note that: the amount 720 or 1080 represents the number of horizontal lines of pixels, with the larger number corresponding to 1920 x 1080 resolution. The letter ‘p’ or ‘i’ stands for progressive and interlaced, respectively. Interlacing ‘paints’ the screen in two passes, one for even lines another for odd, progressive does so in a single pass.

Samsung BD-P1000

The Samsung BD-P1000 was anticipated to be the least expensive high-definition DVD player, but at roughly $1000 still comes out to twice the cost of Toshiba’s HD-DVD player. However, as with most consumer electronics, the price can be expected to drop, if not on this model then on future ones.

For that money the consumer can expect a slim, quality unit from one of the leaders in HDTV. Their DLP TVs are consistently rated among the best available in that class.

In addition, the player will have a 9-in-2 Multi Memory Card slot that will enable viewers to see digital photos on their set. That may or may not be a big advantage, since many HDTV sets come with a similar capacity built-in.

The Samsung will also offer the ability to set an alarm, presumably in order to alert the viewer to an upcoming show or event. Details are sketchy at this point.

Like the other models, the unit is a player only but recordable models were expected shortly after this was introduced so check around before you buy.

Panasonic DMP-BD10

Scheduled to arrive later than the others, the DMP-BD10 was slated for September 2006, along with Panasonic’s plasma-type 1080p HDTV.

Price, for a Blu-ray player, was anticipated to be in the middle of the pack at ‘under $1,500′ according to company data. Even at that price, the company has the advantage of being one of the most highly rated in the field. Their DVD player and HDTV sets are second to none.

The unit is promised to debut with the company’s proprietary EZ-Sync HDAVI feature. The feature allows viewers to connect and control multiple HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) units with a single remote.

It remains to be seen whether Sony’s hotly anticipated Playstation 3 will provide these ‘full HD’ players with further competition. The unit, slated for release November 2006, is reported to be able to play Blu-ray discs, along with downloading and playing games. At $600 it would radically alter the playing field.

You may soon be competing with the kids for control of the game console, just to play a great looking movie.

Whichever brand or model you investigate, be sure to look past the hype and actually test the model in the store. First generation technology has a way of disappointing viewers who have only read about the features.

Plus continue to read reviews before shopping, because newer models come out all across the board. Find ones in your budget range to compare, then list features and benefits to choose the one for your home entertainment and home improvement needs.

A Contracted Painter Will Make Your Life Easier

August 30, 2008

When I went to put a fresh coat on my house I, like many other people, felt that I could accomplish the task myself with little trouble. Little did I know that painting requires a great amount of skill that can only be learned through practice. The patience and attention to detail it requires was beyond me.

Having tried and realized I did not possess the patience to complete this task, as I was only about 10% done and beat, I decided to try another approach and get a contracted painter to do the project. The contractor I hired was professional in nature, speaking to me in a professional tone, but also quite friendly at the same time. He and his team were also efficient in their work. They had about 4 or 5 guys working with them and the larger sized team allowed them to get the job done much more quickly than I would dreamed on my own. A contracted painter can have a bad reputation sometimes and avoiding these is very important.

I was quite cautious to avoid a contractor that would only give me headaches and cause me more stress than I was already experiencing. I have heard horror stories regarding a contracted painter that a friend hired a few years back. She told me that they appeared for the first day’s work and nothing seemed out of place. However, when they failed to appear the rest of the week, naturally she grew concerned. When they finally showed up the following week, she told me that when she confronted the man in charge, he brushed her complaint aside by telling her about their other larger projects they had to attend to. Her experience with this contractor, they were also rude, sloppy and generally disrespectful to her home and lawn, persuaded me to do more research when finding a good painter.

Testimonials like this are not always available when you look into a painter’s history. Often times painters will include testimonials in any ads they place or on their website, but not all of them do it. A lot can be determined about a contracted painter by your initial meeting with them. Not everybody makes the best first impressions, but throughout your first meeting, it is usually pretty easy to determine how a contractor will act through the time you hire them by the vibe you get from them. My own contractor turned out to be quite pleasant. They showed up on time, finished the project and were very kind to my lawn, something that as very important to me.

Be careful to hire a contracted painter who will provide excellent work, but also who is dependable and respectful. It is never any fun to deal with rude contractors who see you as just another project and may disrespect your home. Find a contractor who will respect you and your family and will show up on a regular basis until your project is complete. Avoid those who would blow off your house in favor of other larger project than your own.
